There has been a significant amount of research carried out around the impact shift working has on health. Fatigue is one such area which is continually highlighted due to the disturbance caused to our normal sleep patterns. It is too simplistic to say fatigue is just being very tired. The Health and Safety Executive define it as the “decline in mental and/or physical performance that results from prolonged exertion, sleep loss or disruption of the internal clock." Mark Andrews, Health and Safety Lead at the Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) will highlight the consequences of fatigue, including the impact it has on performance, mental health and general wellbeing. Mark will then explore the measures that should be in a place to mitigate the risks of fatigue, including an effective risk management system, an adherence to working time and regulations, shift patterns and a comprehensive reporting process
