Sharon Baker

Chief Inspector: Head of Custody, Avon and Somerset Constabulary

With courage and integrity, she publicly shared her own domestic abuse experience. By doing so, she broke down longstanding barriers of stigma and silence, encouraging countless colleagues to seek help and speak out about abuse, coercive control, and misconduct within policing.

Her leadership drove significant cultural change: she helped shape new policies to better protect officers and staff who experience abuse, advocated for dedicated internal support networks, and worked to ensure that professional standards investigations address abuse committed by officers robustly and sensitively. Beyond her own force, Sharon collaborated with national policing bodies, delivering training and speaking at conferences to raise awareness of domestic abuse within law enforcement, challenging harmful stereotypes and empowering victims to come forward.

Her dedication to creating a safer, more accountable police service has saved careers, improved well being, and fundamentally shifted attitudes towards domestic abuse. Sharon's courage, compassion, and relentless pursuit of cultural change represent the highest ideals of British policing.
